Caput Mundi – Lomography Color negative 400 Test

Generally (and you can see it all in this blog) I prefer to shoot with film in black and white. Both from the point of view of personal expression and because I believe that is easier and cheaper to self-develop b/w instead of color. Occasionally, however, (you may have noticed this too) I like to take some color photos. I do not have so much experience in this regard, having only used the Kodak Ultramax 400 35mm and a couple of Fujifilm (Pro 400H and Reala 100) in medium format.

A few days ago, I went out to take pictures with the pinhole and I “accompanied” it with the Olympus Om2n, mounting just the Tokina 24mm (no lens hood used) of which you should have seen a few shots in the post dedicated to the Bayern Film Tour. I took a first b/w roll and then  decided to test this (for me) unknown Lomography color film. In reality, as we can read on this site, it is a rebadged Kodacolor VR 400 plus.

I must say that the impressions were pretty good. I rated it @ 320 ISO, and I got 36 excellent (technically speaking) shots. The film is easy to scan without curling and is easily worked in post production. I’m not a big expert in color scanning but it seems to me that the final result is acceptable. The grain is definitely smaller than in the Ultramax 400, sharpness is excellent and i like the color rendering more than this one. A fundamental aid to the film, however, must have given (and I had no doubts about it) the quality of the Tokina RMC 24mm f / 2.8.

Generalmente (e lo potete vedere tutti in questo blog) preferisco scattare con pellicola in bianco e nero. Sia da un punto di vista espressivo, che perché ritengo più semplice ed economico sviluppare da solo il b/n rispetto al colore. Ogni tanto però (avrete notato anche questo) mi diverto a scattare qualche rullo a colori. Non ho quindi una grande esperienza in merito, avendo usato solo la Kodak Ultramax 400 nel formato 35mm ed un paio di pellicole Fujifilm (Pro 400H e Reala 100) nel medio formato.

Qualche giorno fa, sono uscito per fotografare con la pinhole e l’ho “accompagnata” con la Olympus Om2n, munita del solo Tokina 24 mm (non ho usato un paraluce) di cui avete visto alcuni scatti nei post dedicati al Bayern Film Tour. Ho scattato prima un rullo in b/n e poi ho deciso di provare anche questa (per me) sconosciuta pellicola marchiata Lomography. In realtà, a quanto si può leggere in questo sito, si tratta di una Kodakolor VR 400 plus rimarchiata.

Devo dire che le impressioni sono state piuttosto buone. L’ho esposta a 320 Iso ed ho realizzato 36 scatti tutti (tecnicamente) di ottimo livello. La pellicola è facilmente scansionabile, senza fenomeni di curling e si lavora facilmente in post produzione. Non sono un grosso esperto in scansione del colore ma mi sembra che il risultato finale sia accettabile. La grana è sicuramente più contenuta della Ultramax 400, la nitidezza ottima  e la resa dei colori mi piace di più. Un aiuto fondamentale alla pellicola deve però averlo dato (e non avevo dubbi in proposito) anche la qualità del Tokina RMC 24 mm f/2,8.
